Sun splashed beaches; beautiful bays and headlands of folded rock dominate the drive from Gordon’s Bay to Cape Hangklip. From Cape Town a magnificent, two hour scenic drive along the eastern side of False Bay and on to the resort town of Hermanus. The road clings tenaciously to the coastline. The breathtaking views, initially across the bay give a totally different perspective to Table Mountain and the Peninsula.
The pretty town of Hermanus, a much sought after holiday destination has gained universal recognition as the world’s best land based whale-watching destination. Hundreds of Southern Right whales start arriving from June to calve and mate, and they usually have left by the end of November. Low cliffs and rocky shores overlook deep water where the whales can swim to within 50 metres of the waters edge allowing unparalleled viewing. It’s hard to imagine at 60 tons the whales would do anything as frivolous as frolic and at times even launch themselves out of the water - unbelievable but they are on holiday too!!
How about Great White Shark cage diving-not just for thrill seekers it’s also an unforgettable educational experience.
There’s much to see outside ’whale season’, magnificent botanical gardens, a land based penguin colony, shipwrecks, a wonderful five star golf course with a spa and Wellness Centre, water sports, outstanding beaches and of course in this part of the world you’re never far from superb wine estates.
This is a comfortable day trip but an overnight stay offers more scope to explore, discover more secrets and revive body and soul!
